About Family Discovery

The sacred bond of love in families is disrupted when a family member – usually a child - takes on the pain, guilt or agony from another member of the family system – often a parent. Children will do anything out of love for a parent – anything – including taking on their parent's diseases, phobias, drug addictions or emotional trauma. The foundation of Family Discovery is to identify entanglements in families that cause pain and disease and to clear them. Once entanglements have been made conscious, they can be cleared.

Family systems become chaotic when any member of the family is not acknowledged. For example, a son is rejected because he is gay. A daughter is rejected because she marries a person from a different religion. A child is rejected because her mother had an abortion. Not being acknowledged by a family system is far worse than the absence of love. Family Discovery makes it possible to acknowledge all members of a family system – those who are living and those who are dead - who have been forgotten or dishonored for one reason or another. The forgotten children who have died are also acknowledged and honored. The work restores the integrity of the family system to its natural state so that love can flow freely.

How long does it take to clear an entanglement?

Traditional therapies typically focus only on the client, without an explicit consideration of the influences of the larger family system. A limitation with the traditional therapist-client model of therapy is that the client becomes the child in the relationship and the therapist becomes the adult. The unstated expectation is often that it will take a long time for the presenting complaint to clear, whether it is depression, suicidal tendencies, anger, helplessness, hopelessness, etc. It takes time for the insights of the therapist (the "adult") to be revealed to the client (the "child"). Even when the therapist attempts to reveal the insights to the client (the "child"), the client does not/will not take it in. The problem thus remains and perhaps even intensifies. In this way, the client becomes “resistant” and the cycle of anger/abuse/control/defectiveness (or whatever) continues to layer on top of the original problem, complicating the issues further. The real problem gets lost in the process, only to remain deeply embedded. Clarity of understanding never materializes because the root cause of the problem comes from an entanglement in the larger family system.

Family Discovery takes a very different approach to resolving profound threats to wellness such as life threatening diseases, drug addictions, emotional problems or suicidal tendencies. The root cause of such problems can be addressed and resolved by doing one constellation which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the situation. Occasionally Family Discovery concludes with no resolution because more information is needed. Once an entanglement is identified, the root cause of the problem can be resolved. With constellation work, the client is the adult.

What will happen if I attend a Family Discovery Workshop?

Participants convene together in a workshop that is led by Zero Point Healer facilitators. After a brief discussion with a participant who wishes to experience Family Discovery work, the facilitator asks them to choose persons to represent various members of their family system.

Representatives seldom know the persons they are representing. Once all of the representatives have been selected, the client places them somewhere in the room. Once placed, the presence of family members - both living and dead – is felt by everyone in the room. Representatives take on the energy of the family member they represent. The facilitator will often ask representatives how they are feeling. One representative may feel very sad, another may feel stuck and still another may be feeling very happy. The range of feelings can be extreme – from the feeling of elation to the feeling of stark depression. Entanglements are revealed by observing the interactions of the representatives. Once an entanglement is revealed, the facilitator helps to clear it by asking certain representative to make a statement or voice a concern.

Do I have to serve as a representative if I attend a workshop?

Serving as a representative is entirely voluntary. Some persons who attend workshops prefer to observe constellations rather than participate as a representative.

How can a stranger represent someone they do not know?

It is amazing to witness how strangers can so closely capture the energy of a family system. Those of us who do this work on a regular basis continue to be amazed at the mystery of constellation work. There is a distinctive energy that enters the room with each constellation. Ancestors who have a vested interest in seeing an entanglement cleared are present during the work as they guide representatives through each step of the process. All members of the system have an interest in seeing that an entanglement is cleared. The process succeeds because it is guided and inspired by family members who are living and dead.

My issues are private. I do not want them to be exposed to strangers.

A workshop is clearly not the place to air private issues that you do not want to air publicly. Private sessions are available in such circumstances. You may, however, want to consider attending a workshop to have the experience of serving as a representative. We always ask all participants to treat everything that happens in a workshop to be confidential.

Choice discovery

Some people find themselves at a point in their lives where they must decide among several competing alternatives. Should I accept job A or job B? Should I marry the man I am dating now or wait until someone better comes along? Should I live in Seattle, San Francisco, Paris or Atlanta? Persons who confront difficult choices are encouraged to attend a workshop where they can evaluate their choices by observing representatives embody the choices in question. Choice Discoveries are a unique and fascinating way to illuminate the best decision in light of the choices that are being contemplated.

What outcomes can I expect from attending a Family Discovery Workshop?

Dr. Robert Rodgers has done research which looks at the outcomes of Family Discovery for clients and their families. Clients report that one of the biggest benefits from doing Discovery work is that they are able to accept family members as they are, without judgment or grudges. Significant improvements in physical and mental health are also reported. Relationships among members of the family also exhibit a marked improvement. See Healing Entanglements in Families, for an abstract of the study .
